Melissa Lawrence Attacked News Reporters With Rocks and Dogs

A Providence, Rhode Island woman has been charged with assault after she threw rocks, brandished a baseball bat and commanded her dogs to attack a news crew reporting on a kindergarten graduation party shooting.

Melissa Lawrence On Camera

WLNE-TV ABC6 reporter Abbey Niezgoda and a cameraman were on a public street talking to neighbors about the juvenile suspect in the shooting having turned himself in. Captured on camera, Melissa Lawrence is seen throwing rocks at cameraman Marc Jackson, exiting her yard while brandishing a baseball bat, and deliberately commanding her two dogs to attack Niezgoda.

Graduation Party Shooting Led to Interview

16-year old Ny’asia Lawrence, Melissa Lawrence’s daughter, was shot in the back on Sunday while attending her cousin’s kindergarten graduation party. The incident occurred after Melissa Lawrence asked an uninvited young man to either leave the party of pay for the food he was eating. The young man left as directed, but later returned with a group of young men, one of whom began shooting. Ny’asia was the only one injured.

Abbey Niezgoda and the WNLE-TV cameraman approached Melissa Lawrence to speak with her about the suspect’s apprehension. Though it is understandable that Ms. Lawrence would be upset during this difficult time, her reaction to the news crew is extreme and resulted in a terrifying situation for Ms. Niezgoda, who suffered dog bite injuries from the deliberate attack.

Melissa Lawrence Released on Bail

Local news sources indicated 35-year-old Melissa Lawrence was released on $50,000 personal recognizance Wednesday after not guilty pleas were entered on her behalf. Her next court hearing is set for August 8.
The entire incident was captured by Jackson, watch below.
